The Course
Shaped by the moor
Two fell runs across Holcombe Moor either side of 27km on the classic ‘Mountain Trial’ circuit — the road loop with no traffic lights and only four left-hand turns.
First run · 6.3km
Straight onto the fell. Steep, open moorland across the best of Holcombe Moor — honest climbing on grass, trod and stone, with the moor underfoot dictating rhythm.
Bike · 27km
The classic Mountain Trial Holcombe Circuit: an undulating road lap long used for time trialling. No traffic lights, four left-hand turns, and nowhere to hide from the wind. The fastest split ever recorded here averaged 37.0km/h — in 2018.
Final run · 6.3km
Back onto the moor with tired legs, finishing with the exhaustingly steep climb to Peel Tower. Races have been won and lost on this climb — the 2015 title changed hands on it.
Course character
- The runs are true fell running: steep gradients, exposed moorland, and surfaces that change with the weather. Fell or aggressive trail shoes are the norm.
- The bike is road throughout — a rhythm course for riders who can hold power on rolling terrain. Late September on the moors can mean wind and rain; ride accordingly.
- Transition runs from race HQ at the Hare & Hounds, Holcombe.
Detailed mapping, GPX files, marker points and safety information will be published ahead of race day, once finalised with the relevant authorities. Records were set on the original course; if any 2026 routing differs materially, it will be stated plainly alongside the records.
